Madonna with Child – Galleria Borghese – Rome

The work was attributed to Pietro Vannucci only after a complex discussion by critics.
The image, showing a Madonna with Child, was commissioned by some private client for devotional purposes; a graceful Virgin, which in this case does not seem to derive from the live model of the artist’s wife and muse, the Florentine Chiara Fancelli, holds a child standing on her legs.
In the background, there is a countryside landscape characterized by low hills, where a river peacefully flows, and some slender trees recalls the style of Andrea del Verrocchio.
The painting is preserved at the Galleria Borghese, in Rome.
