Madonna with Child and Saints Ercolano and Costanzo or Madonna “della cucina” – Perugia

The tablet depicting the Madonna and the Child between the two Patrons of Perugia, Saint Ercolano and Saint Costanzo, has the unusual nickname “Madonna della cucina”, which literally translates to “Madonna of the kitchen” because it was originally preserved in the ancient kitchen of the Palazzo dei Priori, in the heart of the Umbrian city, where the service staff of the Decemviri used to pray the rosary.
Probably due to its initial location, the painting is irreparably ruined in the shades of oils, which have turned yellow and which the restoration could not restore in the original colors, also due to invasive restoration attemps made in the past, However, the style of Perugino in its late phase is evident, with the transparent and dotted brushstroke and the spatial construction not particularly elaborate. The painting is preserved at the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria.
