Madonna del Sacco – Palazzo Pitti – Florence

The table is recorded in the Tribuna degli Uffizi in the inventory of 1635, and according to critics it was probably conceived to be placed there. The Virgin is in adoration, kneeling in the foreground, while child Saint John is praying just behind her on the right. Both characters are adoring Jesus Child, who looks at his mother while an angel lovingly holds him. The painting is known as Madonna del Sacco due to the detail at the bottom left, a white backpacking where Jesus sits. In the background, Perugino painted a countryside landscape repeating a technique of perspective rendering that recalls the sfumato often performed by Leonardo in his works.

The painting is preserved at Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
