Eternal Father, Saint Romano and Saint Rocco – Deruta

The fresco, which has undergone considerable restorations starting from the nineteenth century, was originally placed in the church of San Francesco in Deruta.
The lower part of the work presents a view of the town of Deruta: it is possible to recognize the church of San Francesco, with the gothic bell tower still in place (it will be then modified in 1704), the church of Santa Maria dei Consoli and the civic towers in the corresponding areas of Sant’Angelo, of the Borgo and of the city of Perugia. In the upper part, surrounded by a luminous sphere, God God raises his right hand as a sign of blessing while he holds a Globe in his left hand, while the elegant silhouettes of Saint Rocco and Saint Romano stands at his sides: the presence of these two saints is probably due to the request for protection of the entire community from the plague. This suggests that a plague wave was going on at the moment of realization of the fresco, probably identifiable with the one occurring in 1476.

The fresco is preserved at the Pinacoteca Comunale of Deruta.
