Crucifixion with Saints Jerome, Francis, Mary Magdalene, John the Baptist and Blessed Giovanni Colombini – Galleria degli Uffizi – Florence

The painting, acquired by the Galleria degli Uffizi in 1904, was commissioned by the Ingesuati Convent of San Giusto fuori le mura of Florence for the Upper Oratory, along with a Pietà, an Oration in the garden and some frescoes for the cloister that were lost, but of which some drawings are preserved between London and Düsseldorf. The Ingesuati Order, being an expert in chemical techniques, was famous in the city for the production of the colors starting from pigments and precious stones, such as lapislazuli, which Michelangelo used for his paintings as well.

This painting shows in the foreground a majestic dead Christ on the Cross; at his feet, a sweet Magdalene is medicating the wounds caused by the nails.

On the sides, three saints (the Baptist, S. Girolamo and S. Francesco) and the blessed Giovanni Colombini, the founder of the Congregation of the Ingesuati, are grieving Jesus’s death.

The painting is preserved at Galleria degli Uffizi, in Florence.
