Banner of Justice – Perugia

The Altarpiece, which shows a sweet and typically Peruginesca Madonna with Child and Angels at the top, presents at the bottom, in addition to Saints Francis and Bernardino from Siena, an interesting view of the village of Porta Eburnea as it appeared after the sixteenth century, seen from a geographical position identifiable as the area of Montemorcino Vecchio.
The work was realized for the Confraternity of San Bernardino in Porta Eburnea, reunited with the one of Sant’Andrea in 1537 in a join headquarter in the rooms of the Oratory adjacent to the church of San Francesco al Prato, probably through the intercession of some wealthy confreres, in order to be able to afford the performance of an artist at the peak of success as Perugino was at the time.
The work is preserved at the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria.
