On the first day, the path by images
“FOLLOWING PIETRO PERUGINO’S FOOTSTEPS” will be inaugurated at 5 pm at Piazza Garibaldi. It will be only the first of a series of events proposed by the Committee for the Protection of Monteleonese Cultural Heritage on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of the Umbrian Master, dedicated to the painting on panel
preserved in the local church, that depicts the Virgin with the Child among Saints Peter and Paul with Christ in the tomb among angels.
Visitors, along the path that leads from the medieval door to the church, will appreciate some precious “photographic details” of the table set in the enchanting
architecture of the buildings of the village; they will get to know the history of the village in the period in which Perugino lived, on the historical events of the work and on the results of scientific investigations carried out in recent months, to finally admire the table, placed from the origin on the high altar of the ancient collegiate church, today parish of Saints Peter and Paul.
The route will be inaugurated in conjunction with the event dedicated to DE.CO., brand of
Denominazione Comunale, initiative for the promotion of local products. The event, also funded by the GAL, will be held starting from Saturday 29 April throughout the weekend. During these days, guided tours will be also organized in the village, in the parish museum, and the Music Documentation Center “Attilio Parelli”, together with workshops for children, tastings and – on Sunday, April 30 – it will be also possible for visitors to learn, taste and buy local and De.co. products during a Local Markets, that will take place during the day; expositors from Tramercato, an appreciated market of agricoltural products coming from the territory around Orvieto, will also be present. The event will end with the proclamation of the “winners” of the call promoted by the AT Proloco in collaboration with the Committee Parade and the two Families, for the creation of a logo dedicated to the event “Palio del Carro” and the race for the best “Torta di Pasqua” (a typical umbrian bread made with cheese during Easter holidays) of Monteleone d’Orvieto, in its third edition.
In July and August there will be two conferences with the presence of scholars and conservative professionals.
The purpose of these initiatives is to make known the presence and influence of Perugino in Monteleone d’Orvieto witnessed by valid written sources that – in addition to recalling the altarpiece – mention the existence of frescoes attributed to Vannucci, to enhance the table, once recognized as produced by the hands of the Umbrian master, and to raise awareness of public opinion to achieve a desired and organic restoration.

Monteleone d’Orvieto, s small Umbrian town on the border with Città della Pieve, conceals inside the Collegiate dedicated to the Saints Apostles Peter and Paul an altarpiece representing the Madonna with the Child and Saints Peter and Paul, crowned by a Christ at the tomb with two angels attributed, for a long time, to Perugino and then be considered work of school, also because of a questionable restoration that has altered the original appearance.

The table, dating to about 1520, is a tempera painting on board, whose dimensions are 290 cm high and 170 cm wide. Currently, not having any document, is considered a work by one of Perugino’s follower, following the publication of the volume “Pietro Perugino” of 1923 Umberto Gnoli, critic and art historian in which he attributes the table of Monteleone to a student of Pietro Vannucci, Giacomo di Guglielmo di ser Gherardo of Castel della Pieve. All the texts preceding this publication, however, refer to the table as an original work by Perugino, the first text in which this attribution is reported is “A life of praise and memories of the distinguished painter Pietro Perugino and his pupils” by Baldassare Orsini, of 1794.
